05.01 - Passions, Strengths, and Community Needs

Today in class, we took time to share out the journaling that people completed in our previous two classes and took time to discuss community needs (discussion slide below).

The list of community needs that we discussed in class was as follows:

  • Improved roadways
  • Increased job opportunities
  • Student opportunities in school (getting classes to fit)
  • Police/community relations
  • People not being able to afford lunches
  • Uneaten food / food waste
  • Food quality (health vs. taste)
  • Weighting course grades (AP vs academic vs alternative)
  • Drugs and alcohol
  • Drug and alcohol use in the middle and high school
  • Developing positive relationships between middle and high school students
  • Student understanding of the long term effects of drugs (esp. in the middle school)
  • Drug use as related to sports team participation
  • Social media's influence on information shared between middle and high school
For homework, people should review the passions and strengths that they identified for themselves and determine a project that would use those strengths and passions to address a community need (one of the ones listed above or others not on the list).
